The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World
The winter game drop for Minecraft has arrived — and it features the first new weapon added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is now available and it has the potential to change how you play Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts update also adds a host of fresh elements and updates focused on animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the development team had already known it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"From the outset, we understood that we desired a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," stated a lead developer. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can joust against your companions on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest use cases for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and deal greater injury [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for mounted duels."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The wild enjoyment doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for equipping the wings and taking to the skies and creating genuine chaos," she hints.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it needs to become an competitive event without delay.
Another key feature in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This underwater creature, which is modeled after the seashells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and mounted for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it transport you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also preserve your oxygen levels, so there's no requirement to come up for air for a breath.
The rest of the additions are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you are able to defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've been thinking about this issue periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the lead clarifies. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus concept art looked striking, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also points out that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross waterways while riding a horse. Furthermore, high-tier barding is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it is worthy of.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
Overall, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the potential for chaos — would have seemed like a major improvement. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mayhem Mounts update is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
