An Down Under young sportsman has tragically died after being hit by a cricket ball during a training drill in Melbourne.

The 17-year-old player was practicing in cricket cages in Ferntree Gully on the weekday when he was struck in the upper body by a delivery from an mechanical bowler. It's believed he was using a helmet at the time of the incident.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene just prior to 5 PM in the afternoon and the young man was transported to the children's medical facility in critical condition. He was put on medical support systems but succumbed to his injuries on the following day.

Community Response and Condolences

The teenager's community sports organization expressed they were "completely heartbroken" by the "tragic passing" of one of their team members and that the youngster's death "will impact by all in our cricket community".

"I understand how strongly this news will impact across our local area and we will offer every possible support we can to our teams and cricket family," stated the community sports leader.

In a online statement, the teenager's sports team offered their sympathies to his loved ones and friends and "to everyone who knew him and the joy that he brought".

"We request you to please honor the personal space of the family during this challenging period," the post continued.

This incident occurs just over a ten years after a previous national player passed away after being struck on the upper body by a ball while playing in a national tournament.

That earlier tragedy, for which authorities determined no fault could be assigned, sparked improvements to protective gear for those playing the sport.
