Caelan Doris Included in Irish Squad While McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad selection update

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has selected captain Doris in his Irish roster for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out due to fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new player in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities says new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland host Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains available, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected as the coach opting against selecting the province's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced group of centre options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only new name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while veteran Ulster lock Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain if the captain fails to recover full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in the capital on Monday before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
